Fillers
Abstract Although the phenomenon of carbon black reinforcement of rubber was discovered about 80 years ago, the nature of the mechanism is still a subject of considerable debate. Multiple theories are presented in the literature. 1–18 There is evidence that both physical and chemical attachments are capable of giving reinforcement effects, such as altering the modulus or tensile strength of the rubber phase. A reinforcing carbon black produces a partial immobilization of the chain segments of the polymer. The modification of an elastomer by carbon black reinforcement and vulcanization generates a unique three-dimensional visco-elastic network that transforms the soft elastomer into a strong, elastic product.
