Studies on Strip Footings Resting on Lateritic Slopes
Increasing urbanization and expanding populations have led to the scarcity of sites suitable for construction. Due to the non-availability of good construction sites, engineers are often required to place footings on sloping surfaces. Bearing capacity is a major concern in geotechnical engineering, and evaluation of bearing capacity of the foundation becomes furthermore complicated when it is placed on a sloping surface, and also, it is a challenging task for an engineer. Sloping grounds are in unstable equilibrium when compared with a level ground. When we construct structures on sloping ground, foundations will be placed on the slope at various levels. Due to the application of load at various elevations, the slopes further lose its stability and chances of interference between footing increase. This paper investigates the settlement behavior of strip footings resting at various levels on lateritic slopes, by carrying out a series of laboratory-scale load tests on model footings resting along the slope surface. The parameters varied are distance of footing from edge of slope and slope angles. Finite element analyses are carried out with the FE software PLAXIS 2D, and the results are compared with those obtained from laboratory-scale load tests for validation. It is observed that the locations of footings along the slope influence the settlement behaviour of strip footings considerably.
