Abstract The ejection of atomic core electrons by an incident beam of medium energy (~ 1KeV) electrons can be exploited in the same way as the electrons ejected by incident X-rays in SEXAFS to obtain local structural information about the exciting atom. When electrons are used the technique is known as SEELFS (surface electron energy loss fine structure). The aim of this paper is to examine aspects of the theory of SEELFS which have not received much attention to date, namely the reason for the apparent validity of the “dipole” approximation, the importance of “exchange” processes and the influence of the elastic scattering of the incident and detected electrons.
