Calculation of Longitudinal Strain Parameter Used in CSA A23.3:19 Torsion Provisions for Reinforced Concrete Members
This paper presents an alternative approach for calculating the longitudinal strain parameter, εx, when using the CSA A23.3:19 torsion provisions for reinforced concrete members. The proposed method explicitly calculates εx as the average of the strains on the top and bottom of the member, making it more applicable for members subjected to large torsions. A study using 291 torsion tests found in the literature shows that the General and Simplified methods can perform poorly when applied to these situations. In comparison, the proposed method gives safer and more accurate predictions of torsional strength.
