Abstract Statistical — probabilistic approaches to brittle failure under multiaxial loading conditions are discussed. Focus is placed more particularly on the Multiaxial Elemental Strength Model which considers the microstructural flaws as physical entities, as opposed to the well-known Weibull statistics. A computerized version of this model allows determination of failure probability for complex loading geometries. Implications for the prediction of failure in ceramics and fiber reinforced ceramic matrices, as well as the contribution of the preponderant factors are examined. Application to lifetime predictions is also addressed.
