Structure and Properties of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Copolyesters
Abstract The phenomenon of liquid crystallinity was discovered by Reinitzer1 in 1888 during a study of the melting behavior of cholesteryl esters, and the structure-property relationships in low molecular weight liquid crystalline (LC) systems are now well understood (see e.g. References 2–4). Liquid crystallinity in higher molecular weight organic substances was reported more recently: in the 1950s, LC behavior was observed in solutions of biopolymers, such as poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate), hydroxypropyl-cellulose and tobacco mosaic virus.5 The role of liquid crystallinity in Nature has evoked a lot of interest because of its contribution to the spatial organization of macromolecules in the living organism, e.g. in the packaging of DNA in chromosomes and the aggregation of microtubules to form the structural framework of the cell.6
