Bridge and Infrastructure Testing and Monitoring in MENA - Examplary Current State and Future Needs
This article attempts to present the current activities in Egypt and similar activities in MENA region which are relevant to bridge and infrastructure testing and monitoring and highlight the expected huge future needs in the field. This is to shed some light on SHM activities in this part of the world having Egypt as an example modern developing country in the region. The huge need for monitoring, testing and assessment investigations in Egypt and MENA for both historic and new structures on one side, and the lack in the numbers of qualified expertise to conduct these investigations on the other side creates a unique environment for development. This unique combination opens the field for introducing unconventional procedure and method of application which attempts to close the gap. This in turn enriches the possibilities of developments and advancements as a whole. Presented in this article are some of the local lessons learned from contributions in the field infrastructure testing and monitoring in Egypt and the MENA region. The illustrated structures types include cable stayed roadway bridges, railway bridges, buildings and historical monuments. Furthermore the article will also present some of the local research development in the SHM field and propose an outline to narrow down the gap between the huge local demand and the current availability status.
