Performance Analysis of Cross Shaped Composite Columns with Perforated Steel Plates
Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns are now widely used in large and industrial buildings, bridges, docks, and piles considering the numerous advantages these columns have over traditional steel and reinforced concrete columns. The exceptional structural performance of CFST columns includes high ductility and strength. Ordinary CFST columns often project outward from the wall due to their substantial cross-sectional size. Additionally, the external steel surface is susceptible to corrosion. As a solution, special-shaped column configurations, have been introduced as they can be hidden in the walls. It ensures a seamless connection between special-shaped columns and the surrounding infilled walls enhances the overall space utilization efficiency indoors. Moreover, steel is encased within the concrete to mitigate the risk of corrosion. This study focusses on enhancing the performance of CFST columns by replacing them with special shaped composite columns. The special shapes such as cross shapes are created with the provision of individual steel mono columns inside concrete at the junction walls. The strength and cost-effective aspects of different models are investigated, and the optimum shape of the column is identified.
