Building Information Modeling (BIM)-Based Sustainable Management of a Construction Project
The majority of significant decisions about a building’s sustainable characteristics are made during the conceptual design and preconstruction stages. For designers to consider building performance in the initial design and preconstruction stages reasonably, a complete set of knowledge concerning a building’s form, various technical systems, context and materials are required. The potential of BIM to allow for multidisciplinary information to be superimposed inside one master model provides opportunity to perform these analyses correctly and efficiently in contrast to the conventional design methods. Successful implementation of BIM for sustainable design is directly measured by the integration and exchange of wealth of information contained in BIM model among different parties and different stages of the project. In this work, a conceptual framework is presented to explore the utilization of open-source tools to automatically extract a partial BIM from the original complete BIM model corresponding to a specific domain. This paper investigates the role of BIM to produce sustainable building designs by providing information needed for enhanced design and better building performance.
