Performance of Side-By-Side Twin Tunnel Excavation Under a Single Pile and Pile Group by the NATM
A series of systematic, three-dimensional finite element analyses was carried out to investigate the performance of parallel hypothetical twin tunnels constructed in weathered residual soil using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This study emphasized the top heading (TH) and the central diaphragm wall (CDW) methods on the deformation and stresses induced on the pile head settlement and axial forces on the single pile and 2×2 pile group when the tunnels were located beneath the piles. The results of the analyzes indicated that the CDW excavation is an effective method to reduce stresses and settlements on piles compared to the TH excavation method. In addition, based on the analysis conditions assumed in the current study, the influence zone of tunnel excavation on the pile head settlement for the pile group depends on the tunnel excavation method, and it can be said that in the TH excavation method it is between -2D to +3D and in the CDW excavation method it is approximately ±2D from the pile center (behind and ahead of the pile axis) in the longitudinal direction, where D is the tunnel diameter.
