Making Cities Sustainable: Tracking Economic Sustainability in Urban India
The United Nation’sUnited Nation’s11th Sustainable Development GoalSustainable Development Goals (SDG) (SDG) to “make cities inclusiveInclusive, safe, resilientResilient and sustainableSustainable” is one which encompasses the idea of sustainableSustainableurban planningUrban planning and building safe, inclusiveInclusive and resource-efficient cities. For cities to become sustainableSustainable, it is imperative that they relieve themselves of problems like povertyPoverty, hungerHunger, inequalityInequalities, illiteracy, drinking waterDrinking water and sanitationSanitation problems, energy povertyPoverty, and lack of innovation and infrastructureInfrastructure, which are intrinsic to the less-developed and low-income countries. The paper aims to study and analyse changes in urban housing and living conditionsLiving conditions and the lives of urban dwellersUrban dwellers and migrants in urban areasUrban areas between 2012 and 2018. Using secondary data on drinking waterDrinking water, sanitationSanitation, hygieneHygiene and housing condition from the National Sample Survey Reports for the 69th Round (July to December 2012) and the 76th Round (July to December 2018), this paper tries to observe and analyse differences and also study the settlementSettlements and migration patternsMigration pattern in slumsSlums and squattersSquatters in urban areasUrban areas. This paper also tries to assert that government intervention in the form of well-planned national schemes and programmes are effective in pushing the country on the path of sustainableSustainable urban developmentDevelopment to achieve international objectives like building sustainable citiesSustainable cities. Lastly, this paper makes a note that to achieve the goal of sustainable citiesSustainable cities, there is need for international recognition of the problem as well as inclusiveInclusive policies by the government for better access of amenitiesAmenities in urban slumsSlums and squattersSquatters.
