Laboratory Waves and Associated Forces
Abstract Regular waves generated in the laboratory with a hinged wave maker show significant changes in wave form during propagation. The generated waves modulate as they propagate ranging from waves very nearly sinusoidal to highly nonlinear waves with higher crests than Stokes waves of same height and period. The forces and velocities measured for these waves do not exhibit modulational features comparable to those in the waves. The modulation of the waves appears to result from the presence of free harmonic wave components generated by the wave maker, nonlinear interactions of the harmonic components in the waves and possibly wave reflections.
