Biocorrosion of Metal Alloys
The present paper reviews the microbial corrosion of metal alloys and steels, which leads to a rapid deterioration of the strength properties of metal structures. The stages of biocorrosion development in metal alloys and steels are described. A method for assessing the biocorrosion rate of metal alloys is presented. The role of various microorganisms in corrosion processes is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the role of sulfate-reducing, as well as manganese- and iron-oxidizing bacteria. Microbial biofilms that cause biocorrosion of metal structures under various conditions are characterized.
