Experimental study on the dynamic behavior of a cylindrical liquid storage tank subjected to seismic excitation
Abstract Cylindrical liquid storage tanks are widely used to store various types of liquid, such as water, oil, chemical products, liquefied gas, etc. Since the leakage of contained fluid by the failure of the liquid storage tank could cause serious damage to human life and economic loss, the liquid storage tank should ensured sufficient safety. Dynamic response of the tank and hydrodynamic pressure acting on the wall are significantly influenced by the flexibility of tank walls and could be largely amplified. Therefore, it is important to understand dynamic behavior of cylindrical liquid storage tanks. This paper presents dynamic test results of a cylindrical liquid storage tank under horizontal earthquake excitation to investigate its dynamic behavior characteristics including beam-type and oval-type vibration. From the acceleration measured at different locations, the occurrence of beam-type and oval-type vibration modes was confirmed and the combined mode governed the vibration of the tank.
