Loss of Economic Returns for Not Investing in Green Residential Buildings in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq: A Sustainable Perspective
This study looks into how energy-efficient green buildings perform economically and analyzes the impact of varying energy price inflation scenarios on cost savings throughout their life cycle. The results reveal that constructing a green building with standard specifications can result in energy life cycle cost savings of $382,284 or 74% compared to a building with basic energy consumption. Isolated green buildings can achieve even higher savings of $228,594 or 44%. However, these savings may decrease with an increase in inflation rates. Despite fluctuating energy prices, green buildings still provide significant cost savings throughout their lifespan. Considering the environmental benefits, green building designs are an attractive option for building owners and investors. If all residential units built in the Kurdistan Region between 2007–2021 were green buildings, the total energy life cycle cost savings would have been $1,298,164,708,764. The study emphasizes the importance of considering energy price inflation scenarios for long-term cost projections and highlights the significant cost savings associated with green building designs.
