Analysis of a New Normative Approach to Calculating Ice Loads Applied on Pile Rows
The Arctic is a very challenging environment for engineering structures because of its extreme weather conditions. In such conditions, the ice load is the most critical factor, which should be considered in the construction of reliable and durable structures, because a high ice load can damage or destroy hydraulic structures. Inaccuracies in the calculation of ice loads can lead to additional repair or reconstruction costs and improper design of structures, which can have a negative impact on the environment. The advances in scientific research have resulted in changes and improvements in the standard methods used for calculating ice loads applied on rows of piles. We propose a new method for calculating ice loads applied on pile rows, which is based on the SP 13330.2018 regulatory document, and compared with the method described on the SP 38.13330.2012 regulatory document. Additionally, we examine the dependence of the ice drift speed on the ice load for different ice field areas and present an analysis of the calculation results based on the regulatory documents. Finally, we present general results and recommendations for calculating ice loads applied on rows of piles considering the specific characteristics of different construction projects and conditions. We anticipate that our results will be useful for engineers and specialists working in the field of design and construction of port facilities in icy conditions.
