Centrifuge Modeling of Soil Slopes with Dual Structure Under Drawdown Conditions
Water level changes threatens the stability of slopes. The deformation and failure of soil slopes with clay and sand layers under drawdown condition is investigated through centrifuge model test. Electrodes are used and they reflect the seepage characteristics of each kinds soil. The full field displacement and water content variation of the slope are measured during the test. The binary structures of the slope show different characteristics in the water content variation and displacement. The water content variation of the sand is synchronous with the water level variation, while that of the clay lags behind water level variation. The displacement direction of the clay layer is anchored to the horizontal compared with that of the sand layer. The soil slope with the binary structure exhibits a progressive failure from the middle of slope top to the slope toe during drawdown. The progressive failure mechanism could be described with the coupled processes of deformation and local failure.
