Effects of the Shield Driving on Soil Arching Around the Tunnel
There is a huge demand for the construction of metros to ease the traffic and reduce the commuting time in the metropolitan cities and other major cities across the country. So, it is necessary to understand the implications of tunnel construction, especially on adjacent underground structures. During the construction of underground tunnels, the stress and displacement around the tunnel region are largely affected which could cause serious threats to the functioning of the existing underground structures. In cohesionless soil strata, these changes in stress may lead to soil arching. In this paper, to understand this behaviour on a young alluvium deposit, a 3D finite element analysis was carried out using commercial software. Hardening soft soil model was adopted for the numerical analysis. It has been established that a loose section of 0.73D above tunnel crown has been formed and soil arching section above this loose section develops for a height of 1.27D.
