Emergency Interventions in the Castle Church of Monreal De Ariza (Spain)
The church of Santa María de la Asunción, in Monreal de Ariza (Spain), is located in the medieval castle of Mont Regal, in the defense line of the Christian territories during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. The first church, around 1200, is Romanesque, with stone masonry walls and main entrance with archivolts of this style; the addition of the sacristy, representative of the late Gothic, occurs in the sixteenth century. The current church comes from the Baroque reform of 1619, with basket-handle transverse arches and half-barrel vaults of double layers of ceramic bricks with lunettes. Its abandonment after 1970 generated a phase of ruin that required several interventions to stop its collapse. Despite this, there was a partial collapse of the 4th transverse arch and the collapse of some vaults. In July 2016, a pre-diagnosis was carried out, due to its dangerous situation. In September 2018, an emergency intervention was initiated to consolidate the building. The most important aspects of this emergency action are described below, analyzing the different types of usual interventions in historic buildings.
