Numerical modelling of thermally induced crack propagation in functionally graded materials using the scaled boundary finite element method
Thermal shocks or rapid temperature changes cause thermal stresses in the material. These thermal stresses can produce very sudden cracks in brittle materials such as ceramics. The modelling of such fracture and damage processes is a very challenging task due to the rapid and almost random development and growth of these cracks.
