Ralph Erskine. The Artic Architect of Modernism

This article analyzes the constructive advances and the bioclimatic content of the architecture of Ralph Erskine (1914–2005), pioneer also in social participation. The research focus on his modernism career marked by the concepts of sustainability and climate adaptation and respect for the landscape. All these studies led him to carefully consider climatic factors, seasonal changes and site-specific conditions and to introduce passive systems that provide comfort for the users of the architecture. Ralph Erskine combines traditional solutions with new constructive possibilities exemplifying the interactions between the industrial and the artisanal system, characteristic of the constructive culture. He drew up an “architectural grammar for high latitudes” which he presented at the CIAM congress in 1959.
