Wood Construction as a Facilitating Mechanism for Environmental Protection, Sustainability and Development. The Case of the Construction and Vernacular Architecture of the Palafitos of Chiloé
The stilt houses of Castro not only stand out from an aesthetic perspective regarding their location and construction within the Chiloé archipelago. Currently they are part of a cultural heritage that is reflected in different aspects: a territory, a vernacular architectural style based on wood, a cultural wealth that is based on ancestral knowledge or a cultural capital that transforms the place into a highly valued tourist destination. Given the role of the stilt house within these dynamics, its potential as a mechanism for environmental protection, sustainability and development is recognized through its understanding and empowerment as a valuable element of Chilote heritage, mainly associated with its materiality as a transmitter of identity and community development. The study will be carried out through the analysis of secondary sources and the construction analysis of the palafitte as an architectural typology, both structurally and climatically.
It is expected to conclude that the development of a wooden architecture can be considered as a facilitating mechanism for environmental protection, sustainability and development as it happens in the Chiloé archipelago.
