Arresting the Heave of Black Cotton Soil Using Geogrid-Encased Granular Pile Anchor
Expansive soils are subjected to cycles of drying–wetting due to imbibition of moisture content. Cracks are developed on the structures due to drying of expansive soils, and the wetting of these soils causes large amount of swelling. Heave is a common factor in case of expansive soils such as black cotton soils and leads to the instability of the structures founded over these soils due to differential settlements. This paper is an attempt to improve the heave behaviour of black cotton soil using geogrid-encased granular pile anchor. The effect of length and diameter of pile to analyse the heave behaviour has been considered. The results of the experimental testing revealed that on increasing the surface area of pile either by increasing length or diameter of the pile, it reduced the overall heave value. Further, the time rate to achieve the final heave also reduced to a larger extent.
