Geocell Reinforcements for Pipe Bends Under Lateral Loading
In the bends of pipelines, a thrust force is generated depending on the internal water pressure and bending angles. Although heavy concrete blocks are generally installed at pipe bends to resist thrust force, the blocks can be considered as weak points during earthquakes. Thus, a lightweight thrust countermeasure of wrapping pipe bends with a geogrid was developed to resist thrust forces. However, when the effect of this reinforced method is insufficient or geogrids are difficult to install at pipe bends, the reinforcement of the passive area behind the pipe bends is required. In the present study, geocell reinforcements were proposed. To investigate the geocell reinforcements for pipe bends under lateral loading, lateral loading tests were conducted on a plate that simulates pipe bends, which was reinforced with a honeycomb-shaped geocell. As a result, the honeycomb-shaped geocell was effective against lateral loading, and the resistance increased when gravel with a high shear resistance was used as the filling material inside the geocell. Moreover, reinforcements using a geocell with multiple single cells can prevent plate floating.
