Conclusions 1. The construction of the rock-filled cribwork protection on the apron, corresponding to a carefully worked out scheme of operation of the bottom sluices, proved to be sufficiently reliable and inexpensive. 2. Experience with the reconstruction of the apron by a concrete lining indicates that it is necessary to maintain the different rows of lining at a high elevation and to fasten adequately the individual concrete blocks. 3. An unlined tailrace canal constructed in gravel-pebble soil and operating under a constant regime can improve its hydraulic characteristics as a result of natural action. 4. In order to prevent the development of pronounced backwater curves, construction of engineering structures across tailrace canals should be avoided (bridges, aqueducts, siphons, etc.).
