Urbanization, Urban Management, and Computer-Aided Planning and Design
In this chapter, an outline of urbanization, its beneficial impacts, and the need of integrated urban management approach to derive the beneficial impact of urbanization and to help attain a resource-efficient and equitable solution of the mounting housing and urban problems, so as to improve the quality of life for all, are highlighted. The limitations of the conventional practice in attaining this goal and the utility of modern management principles, techniques, and tools including computer-aided planning and design by optimization as part of integrated urban management, to overcome these limitations, are illustrated with examples and case studies. A course design of urban management education to impart knowledge of modern management concepts, principles, and techniques is presented to equip urban professionals belonging to various base disciplines to become more accountable and effective managers for resource-efficient and equitable problem solution in the urban sector, resolving conflicting viewpoints and comprehending the above ‘big picture’. In this course design, computer-aided design (CAD) forms a full-length subject of study as part of the core course group: ‘Quantitative Methods, Systems Analysis, Operations Research and Optimization, Information Technology, and Computers’.
