Geotechnical Characterization and Land Subsidence Analysis for the UMRT Line No.3 in Hanoi
To meet the increasing public transportation needs of Hanoi city an 8-line Urban Mass Rapid Transit (UMRT) system of total 318 km is planned and being developed. In the same time, one important geotechnical question on the effect of land subsidence on the UMRT lines has been raised and needs to be addressed. In this study, the data from 17 geotechnical boreholes were collected together with the groundwater drawdowns in the underlying pumped aquifers. The 1D FEM subsidence analyses were conducted for 25 years starting from 2015 until 2040 for drawdowns of 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, and 20 m, respectively. For the last case of 20-m the subsidence for most parts of this line No.3 could reach 0.35 m, except at the northern segment where it could be up to 0.7 m due to the thick soft clay layer. The integrated approach of proper geotechnical characterization and 1D FEM consolidation analysis proved to be a helpful tool for assessment of subsidence of Hanoi city in the future.
