Summary Fracture Initiation and Stress Wave Diffraction at Cracked Interfaces in Layered Media — I. Brittle/Brittle Transition Stress wave scattering about the tips of stationary interface cracks at a brittle-brittle junction in a layered medium and the associated stress-wave induced fracture were investigated. Dynamic photoelasticity was employed to visualize the highly complex interaction process between stress waves and cracks. Methods of linear elastic fracture mechanics were used to analyze regions of high stress intensity as possible sources for crack initiation. The phenomenon of partial load transmission across closed crack walls and imperfect joints and its effect on fracture initiation was also studied.
