Thermohydraulics of an Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage System
Abstract The thermohydraulics of an aquifer thermal energy storage system is reviewed. The storage of hot or chilled water in an aquifer involves three major physical processes: (1) buoyancy flow, (2) forced convection, (3) thermal conduction and thermal dispersion. This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part presents an analysis of buoyancy flow causing the tilting of the interface (thermal front) between hot and cold water. The second part describes a numerical approach that studies the thermohydraulics of an aquifer thermal energy system where all three processes are taken into account.
