Flow Visualization by Vibrating Camera
Simultaneous registration of pathlines and velocity field
Abstract A novel technique for flow visualization is presented. As usual, the flow field is photographed by a time exposure. In front of the camera, however, a slightly tilted mirror is rotating distorting the particle paths periodically. As a result the pathlines show a trochoidal modulation with significant peaks marking subsequent revolutions of the mirror. Thus, particle paths and the accompanying velocity distribution are registered simultaneously. Calibration is integrated in the exposure. The technique also allows for the identification of flow direction. The paper illustrates the “vibrating” camera technique on the basis of some typical flow phenomena.
