Free Vibration Response Studies on Krishna Raja Sagar Bridge Mysore
Bridges are an integral part of the transportation system. It is very important to maintain these structures because of the safety of the passengers using them. Upon request by competitive authority, an attempt was made to understand the dynamic response of the Krishna Raja Sagar downstream bridge situated near Mysore, Karnataka, India. The bridge has some vibration problems which were felt by maintenance workers, pedestrians, slow-moving vehicles, and parked vehicles. The bridge is a T-beam bridge of a total length of 470.4 m and consists of eight bays. To study the free vibration response of the bridge, a structural health monitoring system was used by installing acceleration sensors and a data acquisition system. Two acceleration sensors were installed on the first lane, and a fully loaded truck was allowed to pass on the second lane. The natural frequency under free vibration of the bridge was in the range from 4.25 to 4.6 Hz. An analytical study was carried out by conducting eigenvalue analysis; the initial three modes of vibrations were found out and the second mode of vibration matches with the experimental investigation. Since it is observed that the natural frequency ranges between 4.5 and 6 Hz, it gives discomfort to the pedestrians and slow-moving vehicles.
