Liquefaction Mitigation Using Ground Improvement: A Case Study
Liquefaction susceptibility in cohesionless soils is a common issue faced during the design of pile foundations. Loss of resistance of liquefiable strata leads to larger pile lengths and reduced lateral capacities, affecting project cost and schedule. This paper discusses a case study where ground improvement using vibro sand columns is done to mitigate the liquefaction for structures resting on pile foundation. This technique ensures the improvement of in-situ soil via reinforcement and replacement or densification effect. Performance of ground improvement in terms of densification effect is studied by conducting a series of pre- and post-investigation tests.
