Axial Behaviour of Corroded CFST Columns Wrapped with GFRP Sheets—An Experimental Investigation
Recent days structural members deteriorated by corrosion are the common failure, particularly in the offshore region. Compared to RC structures, steel structures are severely affected by corrosion when they exposed to such a severe environment. Replacement is not an ideal and cost-effective solution. Composite material like FRP can overcome all the demerits of conventional techniques. Since they have a very high corrosion resistance and suitable for all types of repair works. Also, they have high strength and ductility property. The present study investigates the effectiveness of GFRP sheets on corroded concrete-filled steel tubular (CCFST) columns. Totally, eight CCFST columns were used. CFST columns occupy a steady and solid place in the construction industry in recent times. The reason is that the steel tube helps as a formwork for moulding the concrete and no other support is needed since the tube acts as longitudinal and lateral reinforcement for the concrete core. Concrete inside the tube eliminates or delays the inward buckling of hollow section and simultaneously increases the ductility. In the present study, continuous GFRP sheets are used for eternal wrapping. The other parameters used in the present study are number of layers. All columns are tested until failure and influence of GFRP characteristics on the behaviour of CCFST columns including their failure pattern, stress–strain behaviour, ultimate load capacity and deformation control were studied. From the test result, it was found that the GFRP sheets wrapping significantly upgrade the strength and service life of corroded CCFST columns.
