Valorization of Wastepaper Sludge Ash as Supplementary Cementitious Material in Concrete
The problem of rational recycling of industrial waste is becoming a major challenge in Ukraine. Paper industry is responsible for significant volume of wastepaper sludge, which can be dehydrated and used as alternative fuel. Wastepaper sludge ash obtained after incineration can be successively used as building material. It can be effectively used as an active mineral addition in cement-based materials, asphalt, soil stabilization, and possess a sufficient pozzolanic or hydraulic activity. This complies with main concept of circular economy – reuse, recycling, and recovery.
Present work examines the possibility of using wastepaper sludge ash as partial replacement of cement for pavement concrete. In this study 5% and 10% of Portland cement was replaced with wastepaper sludge ash (WSA) powder. According to particle size distribution of concrete components, WSA improves particle packing and helps to form more dense concrete structure, which is confirmed by improved water absorption and open porosity of the tested concretes. WSA slightly reduces compressive strength of concrete at 28 days of curing. However, flexural strength of concrete with 5% cement replacement at 56 days of hardening is slightly higher than that of control concrete, which can be related to prolonged hydration of WSA.
