Extraction of Priority Pollutants Using Inorganic Ion Exchangers
Abstract Priority pollutants include metals (such as cadmium and mercury) together with organic herbicides (such as atrazine). The paper will survey the ranges of inorganic ion exchangers that are available and the ways in which they may be used to remove the priority pollutants. With respect to inorganic materials, the main emphasis will be on cation exchangers but there is a renewed interest in anion exchangers which will also be considered. Specific processes involving titanium (IV) oxide, goethite and silicates will receive attention. The inorganic anion exchangers will be exemplified using the layered double hydroxides which may be used to remove coloured substances such as dyes from aqueous streams.
