On Nonlinear First Ply Failure Behaviour of Angle Ply Composite Thin Skew Plates Using FEM
The laminated composite skew plate has gained wide popularity in practical engineering field of applications like civil, aerospace etc. due to high aesthetics and predominant material properties. Now-a-days the failure aspect of composite material is very important topic of interest to the researchers. This research work intend to examine the first ply failure characteristics of laminated composite skew plate considering geometric nonlinearity. An eight-noded isoparametric curved serendipity element having five degrees of freedom at each node is used here for developing the present finite element code which is validated through solving some benchmark problems available in the literature. Various well-established failure criteria including the Puck failure criterion are adopted here for finding out the first ply failure load values as well as some other failure information like failed ply and failure modes also. Effect of mixed edges on first ply failure behaviour and nonlinear perspective of analyses for acquiring the failure load values for angle ply laminates are accorded in this paper. The results of present numerical investigations are essentially explored from skew plate design standpoint.
