Repair of Reinforced Concrete Column Hinges by Polyurethane Jacketing
The occurrence of earthquakes is inevitable event, that has happened in the past and will happen in the future. Their impact to the human life and the damage they cause is strictly governed by the design of the structures and the quality of construction. Even though nowadays the earthquake engineering science is highly developed there is no flawless project and in case of high seismic events damages do occur on new structures as well as on the existing ones.
This research deals with specific types of damaged reinforced concrete elements – hinges on frame structural elements. The simple yet effective application of polyurethanes leads to rapid repair of damaged elements allowing structures to be operational during the period of earthquake aftershocks but also in future exploitation period. Two specimens of reinforced concrete columns have been experimentally tested via quasi-static method in two phases. Each one was first tested in its original state by cyclic loading. After formation of hinges next to the fixing points the polyurethane repair was applied, and then the repaired columns were tested again. Linear variable differential transformers, strain gauges and load cells were used to follow the desired physical quantities at any time step of the testing.
The results show promising outcomes in terms of real scale application of the repair method. The ductility was increased while maintaining the bearing capacity of the column for additional cyclic deformations. Perfect bonding of the polyurethane to the concrete was observed, allowing further development of the proposed concept.
