Preparing for Human Expansion into Exurban Riparian Areas
Water, vegetation, and wildlife concentrate in the wetlands and riparian areas of the exurban environment. This chapter describes the impacts of exurban development on the life forms and functions of these vulnerable systems. Strategies for reducing negative impacts are also discussed, including the selection of appropriate development density, spatial distribution, infrastructure construction and location, and wastewater and storm water management. The role of conservation and mitigation efforts in maintaining wetlands and riparian habitat is described, including land set asides, native plant protection, restoration of degraded habitat, and the mitigation of on- and off-site development impacts.
