Laser Surface Melting and Gas-Alloying of Ti-6A1-4V
Experimental Approach and Property Evaluation
Abstract The effect of CO2 laser surface treatment of Ti-6A1-4V is discussed. Laser surface melting and gas alloying of the Ti-6A1-4V is undertaken in an atmosphere of argon or alternatively, nitrogen diluted with argon. The gas composition of the atmosphere is either 100%Ar, 90%Ar + 10% N2 or 80%Ar + 20%N2 by volume. The microstructure of the laser processed layer is martensitic when processed in pure Ar; for atmospheres containing nitrogen, a continuous TiN surface layer is present. All material melted in an atmosphere containing nitrogen exhibits some cracking in the processed layer. In spite of the cracking, results from performance evaluation illustrate that the laser treated material has both a substantially superior cavitation as well as water droplet erosion resistance.
