Characteristics of Wind and Solar Power Plants Operation in the Energy System
The main condition for reliable operation of power systems is the correspondence of volumes of generated and consumed electricity at any given time. Therefore, for management of power systems with wind power plants (WPPs) and solar power plants (SPPs), we need to accurately predict their generation modes, plan the operating modes of other objects of the electric power system, and ensure readiness of traditional power plants (thermal, hydraulic, nuclear) to generate electricity at all time intervals with a given maneuverability. This study presents the analysis results of the main characteristics of one such power system, which are most affected by WPPs and SPPs, namely the control range of active power and the rate of increase/decrease of active power. As for WPPs and SPPs, their installed capacity utilization factors and dynamic unevenness coefficients can be calculated to determine the requirements for maneuverability characteristics of equipment of traditional power plants. In the power system studied, largest power fluctuations of 1126 MW were registered for WPPs and 769 MW for SPPs. Accordingly, the rate of change of load of traditional power plants at such amplitudes should be 75 and 51 MW/min, respectively.
