Enhancing Human Response to Emergency Notification and Messaging
Abstract In buildings using technology-based warning or messaging systems, it is the goal for occupants to be alerted and provided with critical information in order to respond appropriately. Whether this warning information is provided through audible, tactile, or visual means, the emergency message must be effective so that occupants can act safely and accordingly. In order for a message to be effective in the first place, occupants must pay attention to the message. Since many building occupants may be preoccupied with what they are currently doing, the environment must be changed so that occupants switch their attention from their current activity to the emergency. For example, if the message applies to a movie theater, the projector should be stopped and the lights turned on [11].
