The 1740 Neapolitan Festivities Drawings
Abstract This paper discusses the Narrazione delle Feste fattesi in Napoli per la nascita della Ser. Reale Infanta delle Due Sicilie and takes place within the discipline of drawing. It results in an unprecedented space system graphical reading, on ephemeral architectures as well as the installation on an urban scale, carried out through a geometric-configurative analysis. This reading highlights the remarkable geometrical-mathematical knowledge of Ferdinando Sanfelice, the architect who designed and built the stage set for the celebrations. The hermeneutical approach is based on the critical reading of iconographic and documental sources (conserved at the Biblioteca di Storia di Patria and Gabinetto di Disegni e Stampe del Museo di San Martino, Naples) such as the Illustrative Report (Narrazione) of the event. Through these sources and the use of Naples urban-scale views (coeval on the celebrations date), views of Largo del Palazzo in its original spatial configuration were obtained. This reading has also resulted in a modelling and visualization of the pyramidal tower and its planimetric installation.
