Friction Mechanisms and Modeling on the Macroscale
Abstract The desire to understand friction on a fundamental level arises because friction exists so widely in common experience and because controlling friction can improve the quality and safety of our lives, enable the advance of mechanical technology, and create jobs in industries like transportation, manufacturing, oil drilling, and power generation. The earliest philosophical explorations of friction originated from macroscopic observations, but as physical sciences and engineering matured, explanations began to center on events happening on much smaller size scales. Now, machines themselves are approaching the sizes of the conceptual building blocks of frictional behavior. This chapter reviews explanations of ‘macroscopic’ frictional phenomena that are based on mm- to μm-scaled objects and events. Finer-scale phenomena are described elsewhere in this book.
