Field and Laboratory Investigations
9.10 Summary Coastal engineering is an atypical branch of civil engineering in that coastal engineering design is less dependent on government or professional society developed design codes (e.g., versus the design of bridges, buildings, highways, and water treatment facilities). It requires a thorough understanding of the complex air/water/land environment at the site where a design is to be carried out, coupled with an understanding of the procedures needed to satisfy design requirements in this complex environment. Both this understanding of the coastal environment and the development of coastal engineering design procedures are strongly dependent on field and laboratory investigations-the subject of this chapter.
