Optimal lapping and polishing process parameters for finer surface finishing of GCr15 steel cylindrical roller bearings
The precise surface finish and geometric accuracy of cylindrical rollers play a vital role in determining the longevity of bearing. To evaluate the effects of abrasive size and machining load on the surface roughness of GCr15 steel cylindrical rollers in the lapping and polishing process, existing measured data for the process parameters are tabulated as per the Taguchi’s L9 OA (orthogonal array). The Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the optimal process parameters. Empirical relations for the surface roughness (SR) and roundness (R) of the rollers are developed in regard to the process parameters. The adequacy of empirical relationships is demonstrated by measured data. The SR of CNC-turned cylindrical rollers made of GCr15 steel is appreciably reduced with SiC abrasive particle size in the lapping process and further slightly reduced in polishing process with Al2O3 abrasive particle size. This study demonstrates the possibility of achieving a finer surface finish on cylindrical rollers after a lapping and polishing process.
