Integrating Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in the Curricula of Higher Education Institutions: An Approach for the Hindukush Himalaya Region
The Hindukush Himalaya is an ecologically diverse region with great social and cultural diversity. The region has seen a growing incidence of disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods in the recent past. The impacts of these changes are socially differentiated and gendered. This is on account of the patriarchal nature of societal institutions, growing migration of men, and the gender- based division of labour. In order to understand the socially differentiated nature of disaster risk in the Hindukush Himalaya, it is necessary to impart an understanding of concepts and ideas related to gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) in higher education. In this backdrop, this paper presents an overview of concepts that need emphasis in such curricula. It highlights the factors that make a lens of gender and social inclusion necessary in the context of curricula for disaster risk reduction in higher educational institutions. Such efforts need to be built around a set of core concepts, while accounting for local specificities and embedding the analyses of GESI within an understanding of the links between the social, cultural and ecological diversity. It concludes with the outline of a methodology to asses GESI integration in Higher Education Institutions.
