The First Construction with Reinforced Concrete Structure in Romania
RC is introduced in Romania since the end of the 19th century and the first construction with a RC structure was designed and executed between 1886–1888, shortly after obtaining the patent of invention from 1867 in France. The grain silo built in Braila, the main Romanian export port from the Danube, has a unitary structure with dimensions of 30.00 × 120.00 m and a height of 18.15 m. Mainly, the structure comprises the following: the foundation system consists of a concrete slab with a thickness of 1.50 m placed on a wooden poles; outside: the perimetral walls of stone and brick masonry; inside: precast RC vertical cells for storage placed on the entire height of the building. The main innovative solutions used for this construction are: the introduction of RC as a new construction material (for the first time in Romania), the cells of the silo are made of two types precast RC elements with the welding of reinforcements during assembly (for the first time in the world), the storage system adopted is a new one, vertical cells (introduced in Europe after 1881); the cross section of the cells is hexagonal (this section was chosen given that at equal storage capacity the hexagonal cell has a smaller perimeter and shorter sides than a square cell). In present, 135 years after its construction, the grain silo from Braila is classified as historical monuments of architecture in Romania and is in service.
