Surface Response Functions Due to Laser Irradiation
Abstract Many non-metallic materials exhibit both photochemical and photothermal effects when irradiated with intense laser radiation. The relative role of these processes depend primarily on laser wavelength with photochemical processes dominating in the ultraviolet. A quantitative estimate of the importance of photochemical and photothermal processing can be obtained from a simple physical model developed in this paper. It is shown that the adaptation of an irradiated surface leads to radiation resistance and to unique surface morphologies/chemical properties.
