Analysis of damage in mono composite leaf spring subjected to multiple cracks scenario
The inspection and analysis of damages in composite structures has become the front line investigation in recent years. The internal level multiple cracks initiation and propagation in composite structure during service reduces the load bearing capacity and fails catastrophically. In this paper, damage assessment is performed on Composite Mono Leaf Spring with artificial multiple cracks across its length. Mathematical modeling is formulated for an intact and cracked leaf spring. Modal analysis is carried out to extract Eigen value and Eigen vectors. Then, modal curvature and flexibilities are determined for a set number of modes past mass normalization. Further, presence of multiple cracks are identified using change in natural frequency, location of multiple cracks is determined using modal flexibility index and modal curvatures. It is noticed that there is appreciable difference in the modal flexibility index at 12th node due to the failure region of the leaf spring and the negligible difference in modal curvature at 3rd node due to the node nearest to the fixed end of the beam. It has been concluded that the modal flexibility index and modal curvatures methods assess the damage with accuracy and precision.
