Introduction to Uncertainty and Risk
Abstract In this chapter we discuss the concept of uncertainty and risks from the two different viewpoints – the theoretical and the project management viewpoint. We provide an overview of uncertainty classification that extends beyond the two typical approaches and discuss the types of uncertainty project managers are often challenged with – volitional, agonistic, and dialectic uncertainty. Further, we provide evidence of a divergence in approaches adopted by project managers and decision theorists as well as of the link that allows us to develop a holistic approach to project risk management.
